The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle, has been one of my favorites ever since I saw the video decades ago. My copy of the book has been read by me multiple times, and by both my children. They've even memorized parts of it. It's a magical, funny, moving story. Really, an important part of our lives - when I'm old and grandfatherly, I fully expect to be reading the book again, with my grandkids, watching for that spark that I know will be there.

It now turns out the author is is being fucked.

Sad fucking world. Give 'im some money, or buy some of his stuff. You wont regret it, and your karma will love you for it.

Righteous

Daily Kos: Bush Supporters of the Far Right: Cries from the Lake of Fire

I know you hate me, and anyone else to dares disturb the thin strands of alternate reality in which George W. Bush is an intellectual giant, Saddam really was responsible for 9/11, the economy is getting better by the minute, and we capture the most very important members of al Qaeda on a weekly basis.

But here's some advice. You'd better start hating me more. This is the world you forged and, unfortunately for you, I'm beginning to take a fancy for it. Welcome to the politics of your own party, finally sprouting from the ground on which you planted the seeds and shat upon them.

Irony Much?

I was watching the news last night (almost enjoyable, given the amount of bush-bashing) when who should pop up in a PSA that Junior's mom, Barb. She was extolling the virtues of eating dinner as a family - apparently, eating together reduces the chances of your children abusing alcohol and/or using drugs.

Um.

Perhaps they could have found better role model, given her kid's alcohol and drug abuse problems? Not to mention Bushy's kid's problems... Not to mention her other son's kid's problems... At least family dinners prevent debauchery, right?

Waterspout near Mayaguez

tornado

I've only seen 2-3 of these during the many years I lived in PR, and they're always impressive. This is the first one I've heard of on the west coast of PR, though given the regularity and ferocity of thunderstorms in the area, they probably happen regularly.

Back when I was a kid, I remember seeing one while we were sailing - it must've been formative because: a) my dad never went sailing again when the tiniest hint of bad weather could be seen, b) my brother became a meteorologist.

Trivia: the pics seem to have been taken from the CompEng/EE building at UPR Mayaguez, my Alma Mater, looking out over the General Studies building. Not much seems to have changed...

Scientist Philosopher

Came across this, thought I should share:

Physical concepts are free creations of the human mind, and are not, however it may seem, uniquely determined by the external world. In our endeavour to understand reality we are somewhat like a man trying to understand the mechanism of a closed watch. He sees the face and the moving hands, even hears it ticking, but he has no way of opening the case. If he is ingenious he may form some picture of the mechanism which could be responsible for all the things he observes, but he may never be quite sure his picture is the only one which could explain his observations. He will never be able to compare his picture with the real mechanism and he cannot even imagine the possibility of the meaning of such a comparison.
- Albert Einstein

I think this is a good litmus test - your reaction tells you a little bit about yourself.

Classic. My favorite (from the ever eloquent Fred Phelps):

Pray for more dead bodies floating on the fag-semen-rancid waters of New Orleans.

Irrational belief can lead you down some wierd, wierd paths, I guess.

Can't you just *FEEL* the hate?

AMERICAblog: Lead religious right group promotes theory that God wiped out NOLA on purpose

“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again."

Speechless. Really.
